USING FTP TO ACCESS FOLDERS ON THE HAWK SERVER OR WEB SPACE HOSTED ON OSPREY
Computer Services has setup File Transfer Protocol (FTP) access to key data folders on the Hawk Server and web folders on the Osprey web server. These folders can be accessed from any computer with a Internet connection. If you have a working knowledge of using FTP, you may use the information below to FTP to Hawk and/or Osprey. If you do not have a working knowledge of using FTP, the remainder of this document will explain how use FTP. NOTE: anonymous FTP is not allowed.
FTP Host: hawk.gdn.edu (for H: drive or class folder access)
or
osprey.gdn.edu (for web folder access)
FTP User name*: your Gordon Network User name
FTP Password**: your Gordon Network Password
** Make sure you have changed your password to something other than your initial password before you access folders via FTP. If you have not changed your initial password follow the instructions under "". You will NOT be able to access FTP successfully unless you change your initial password.
* **: see Computer FAQ for network account instructions
FTP Using a Web Browser
The easiest FTP method is a web browser such as Internet Explorer. To FTP to a host using a browser, you enter the FTP host name in the location or address field of the browser in the following format: ftp://hawk.gdn.edu (or ftp://osprey.gdn.edu for web folder access). The browser will then prompt you for your network username and password. Upon logging in to the FTP host, you will see the FTP folders. (If you are using Internet Explorer 7, you will need to take the additional step of clicking on the Page button at the top, and then clicking on 'Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer') You can then click on the folders to navigate directories. Click on any file and copy and paste to your local computer (My Computer). You can now make any desired changes to the file on your local computer.

A browser works well for downloading files from the FTP host. Uploading files from your local PC to the host is a little more complicated. To upload a file, you will need to open both your browser and a window to your local computer (My Computer). Resize the two windows so that you can see both your local PC window and the browser window. Then, drag and drop a file from your local PC to the browser window. The file will then be uploaded to the FTP host. Note that you must navigate to a folder on the FTP host that your account has access for writing/creating files.
To close or disconnect the FTP session, you must Exit (or close) the browser.
FTP Using Microsoft Office
FTP access for Opening and Saving files is built into the Microsoft Office product. From the Open or Save As dialog in Microsoft Office, drop the "Look in..." or "Save in..." list. At the bottom of the list, select "Add/Modify FTP Location". Enter the following in the "Add/Modify FTP Locations" dialog:
Name of FTP site: hawk.gdn.edu or osprey.gdn.edu
Log on as: Select User and enter your network username in the field
Password: Enter your network password
Click OK to save this FTP location.
You can then use the FTP location to Open and Save As just as you would any drive/folder on your PC. To use the FTP location, you must be "connected" to the internet using your dial-up ISP.
