March Is Made For Baseball

There is no excuse for not catching a Gordon College baseball game during the month of March! The Highlanders open a stretch of home dates on Wednesday that run through March 30. Two conference series will highlight the schedule as Darton College and ABAC return to Barnesville on back-to-back weekends. The Cavaliers will begin their three game series with GC on Friday (March 19) at 6 p.m. and conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday. Gordon College is now 14 – 13 on the year and 1 – 2 in conference play.

GC Can't Overcome Start

The numbers say it all! 11 batters, 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 home run, 1 error, and 5 runs. Unfortunately, that's the way South Georgia started today's first inning of the final weekend series game in Douglas. After the shock wore off, the Highlanders were able to create their own big inning as Landon Anderson hit a two-run homer in the fourth. The runs didn't stop there as GC followed with a four-run fifth as designated hitter Robbie Payne blasted a grand slam. However, the back-to-back power innings would not be enough as Gordon College would eventually fall to the Tigers 10 - 7. The Highlanders now return home to the Athletic Complex on Wednesday when they play East Georgia College.

Visitors Will Challenge GC Today

Lincoln Trail College (IL) will arrive in Barnesville fresh off a 10 – 6 win over Middle Georgia College on Sunday. After a three-game weekend series at Chipola (FL), the Highlanders must be ready to play as the Statesmen bring a tradition rich baseball program to the Athletic Complex for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. GC will follow today’s two games with a single nine inning contest on Tuesday (March 9). This will be the final tune-up before the Highlanders begin conference play on Friday at South Georgia College in Douglas.

Williams Grand Slam Powers GC

Sophomore Kelly Williams blasted a grand slam in the top of the third inning to propel Gordon College past Chipola (FL) 5 – 4 in Friday night’s opening game against the Indians. The grand slam was obviously the difference for the Highlanders as Chipola chipped away at the deficit and scored one run in each of the next four innings. However, it was not enough as starting pitcher Pat McGowan kept the Indians at bay throughout the night and Casey Shiver closed the door on them in the final frame. The two teams will conclude the series Saturday (March 6) with a doubleheader in Marianna.

GC is now 10 – 8 and expect another competitive series from the Indians. A single game is scheduled for tonight while they close out the weekend with an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday.

Former Highlanders Making Immediate Impact

Three former Highlanders are having an immediate impact on the baseball program at the University of West Georgia. After stellar careers at Gordon College last year, Keith Manley, Blake Parrott, and Brandon Mainor are making a name for themselves at UWG. Keith Manley is part of the pitching rotation while first baseman Blake Parrott has been selected as team captain for the 2010 squad. Not to be outdone, right fielder Brandon Mainor was named the Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week. In the first four games of the Wolves’ season, he batted .714 (10 – 14) with five runs scored and eight RBI’s. Congratulations to all three former Highlanders!
